Spring Season 2013

Sun 18 November 2012

We are thrilled to be able to announce the 2013 Spring Season at the ADC Theatre and Corpus Playroom, packed with great drama, musical theatre, comedy, new student writing and much more.

At the heart of the season is Anton, a double bill of Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov and Three Sisters, staged in the round on the ADC Stage. The two plays, written at the beginning and end of Chekhov’s career, will be performed on alternate nights and will challenge the audience to view the ADC stage as they never have before.

Kicking off the season in January is the European Theatre Group’s The Merchant of Venice. Set in contemporary Naples, this daring production will look at man's inhumanity to man through the horror of reality television and euro-trash youth culture. This will be followed by Enigma, the annual dance show, featuring Hip Hop, Salsa, Ballet, Jazz, Breakdance and Afrobeats.

There is a wide variety of drama across the season, ranging from one of the great modern tragedies of the twentieth century, Terrence Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea, to Tony Kushner’s Angels in America – Part One: Millennium Approaches, an epic theatrical event tackling issues of AIDS, liberalism, homosexual identity, race and ideology in modern America. At the Playroom, we have an ecletic mix of dramas, including Pinter's play of love and deception, Betrayal, Lorca's quiet and intense The House of Bernada Alba and Albee's surreal and sensitive The Goat or Who is Sylvia?

It is an extremely exciting season for musical theatre, the highlight of which is the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club's annual two-week musical - Elton John and Tim Rice's Tony Award-winning Aida. With a captivating story, electrifying score and beautiful design, this rarely performed musical is perfect for the whole family.

The ADC Theatre will also present Stephen Sondheim’s Company, in a surreal and stripped-back production. The 24hr Musical will see a musical written, rehearsed and performed in one day whilst The Improvised Musical troupe will perform a different show every night of their run at the Playroom, constructed entirely with suggestions from the audience.

The ever-popular Footlights Smokers are joined by three sketch shows: Lost Property, from the up-and-coming comedians, Yellow, and Dressing Down, the Footlights Spring Revue 2013, featuring the best of Cambridge's comic talent.

We are also proud to be hosting a range of new student-written productions: look out for the haunting Leaving the Ward, the charming Are You Sitting Comfortably? and lyrical new opera Dust Song.

Throughout the term in both venues we have a fantastic selection of One Night Stands, including Corpus Smokers, Cambridge University Show Choir, Fitz Barbershop, Churchill Jazz Band, Hatch and The Vagina Monologues.

The full season will go on sale on Wednesday 5 December.
