Light Shining in Buckinghamshire

Caryl Churchill

Content warning [May contain spoilers]

England, 1640s.

The world has been turned upside down by civil war and religious fervour. A rag-tag group of ordinary people with extraordinary ideas wait for the Second Coming of Christ, and contemplate a new and better world. Against the chaos of a nascent new order, preachers, soldiers, beggars, farmers, and writers strive to build heaven on earth according to their own vision. But the tides of history are strong, and a few dissenters can only do so much. What happens when idealism fails and the new status quo has only marginally more room for you than the old one does? When does collective optimism fade? And how do we maintain the dream of utopia in a world that seems bent against it?

This amateur production of “Light Shining in Buckinghamshire” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk
