Bedroom Farce: Meet Malcolm and Kate

Bedroom Farce: Meet Malcolm and Kate

We catch up with the 'Bedroom Farce' cast members Malcolm and Kate (played by John Tothill and Hollie Witton) to talk about their knack for portraying loveless marriages...

...this scene contains a cheeky, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kiss which, interestingly, is not only John’s first kiss ever (either on or off stage) but is also possibly Hollie’s last

In our first ever show at the ADC, John played a closeted gay man and Hollie an alcoholic spinster, and you’d be right to think that nothing has changed. We had hoped that that was the end of it and we’d never have to see each other again, but (owing in no small part to the intervention of our parents) we now find ourselves married, and Alan Ayckbourn’s Bedroom Farce has given us the platform to bring the nuances of our sexless union to the attention of a wider public. Malcolm and Kate are tediously in love. Their first scene is rife with cloying niceties, sickly nicknames and the most infuriating in-jokes you’ve ever seen. Needless to say we love playing it. Also – spoiler alert – this scene contains a cheeky, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kiss which, interestingly, is not only John’s first kiss ever (either on or off stage) but is also possibly Hollie’s last. However, the marriage is not without its difficulties, and Malcolm and Kate have their problems too. Beneath the surface, they are perhaps not as blissfully wed as they may at first seem, and this comes to the fore when their party disastrously unravels. It’s been a joy to rehearse such funny writing with such a lovely cast. Ania Magliano-Wright is also in the show.
