Music: Jule Styne; Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim; Book: Arthur Laurents
Gypsy follows the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, her sister June, and her mother, Madam Rose. Based on Lee's memoirs, it follows Madam Rose's unrelenting and unstoppable ambition, and her desperate desire to get her daughters' names up in lights.
Over the course of the drama, Rose continually fails to get her daughters booked in big-time Vaudevillian theatres; we see the tensions in the mother-daughter relationships grow stronger, and eventually we are exposed to the full force of Rose's pent-up emotional anguish.
Exploring the dynamics between parents and children, the capacity for retaining a dream and the pain of becoming disillusioned, and the psyche of a formidable mother, Gypsy is an absolute powerhouse of musical theatre.
