In late 1950s Manchester, 17-year-old Jo is tired of the constant move from bedsit to bedsit with her flighty mother Helen. Jo finds her escapism in a romantic relationship with a black sailor, declaring her love and desire. However, she finds herself left alone when her sailor goes off to sea, and her mother leaves for London with a rich new man. Discovering she's pregnant, Jo looks for lodgings to provide a home for her baby and moves in with Geoffrey, an art student struggling to hide his homosexuality. This unusual pair find solace in each other, and agree to look after the other in the new home they create. But can the happiness last?

This heartwarming, stark play was written by Shelagh Delaney at the tender age of 18. Exploring controversial topics at the time, Delaney mixes all sorts of social issues into quirky, fantastic characters that work their way through the poverty and marginalisation of 1950s Manchester. Unusual and fascinating, this play is a real treat.
