This year, for the first time ever, Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society (CUMTS) are partnering with the ADC Theatre to transform the Larkum Studio into the CUMTS Cabaret. We're presenting three original cabarets, all of which combine song and storytelling in a unique way. We sat down with Izzy Lane, the writer & star of Liquor & Lust, our first cabaret show, to find out more about what's in store for audiences on the 30th October at 8pm:
What is the show about?
Quite simply, liquor and lust. Alcohol and longing. Drinking and the consequences of it.
Why did you want to stage this and what makes the show unique?
I adore music theatre, and I thought this was a great opportunity to show off some of my favourite tunes. I aim to display every version of drunk girl there possibly is, from angry drunk, to horny drunk, to crying-in-the-club drunk, and every version in between.
What is your favorite part of rehearsing and performing the show?
Getting the chance to sing relatively unknown songs from musicals like The Last Ship and Lempicka, that display powerful women who are unafraid of getting drunk and confronting their deepest desires. These musicals had short-lived lives on Broadway or the West End, so being able to bring them to a wider audience in Cambridge is a real privilege, as they are filled with hidden gems! It's also been such a pleasure getting to play music with one of my best friends, Eliza (my accompanist) and getting to explore songs that for a variety of reasons I may never get the chance to perform anywhere else!!
Why should audience come and see the show?
If you want an excuse to have a drink and singalong to a fun-filled hour of musical theatre, go see a fabulous show, and do it all with a drink in hand too? Then this is the show for you.
What should an audience expect? What will they take away?
Eliza and I sitting at the piano bringing you big, jazzy and only a little bit over the top! Hopefully they will walk away feeling tipsy on life! Like they want to dance through the halls and that no matter what type of drunk they are, they simply aren't alone!
Favourite part of the process?
Definitely getting to play music with one of my best friends and getting to explore songs that a variety of reasons I may never get the chance to perform anywhere else!!
Liquor and Lust premieres for one night only at the CUMTS Cabaret in the Larkum Studio on Wednesday, 30th October 2024 at 8pm.
