Quiet Light

Erin Hutton

Content warning [May contain spoilers]

In a flooded world, Ray’s boat crashes into a lighthouse. Stranded with Ava, the strange lighthouse keeper, he waits for help to arrive. Haunted by memories of his absent wife, he gradually notices that something is terribly wrong within the lighthouse. The storms that shake the walls. The kettle that boils without being plugged in. The fire axe by the wall. Ava reassures her mother, Mandy, that Ray will leave soon. Ray cannot see Mandy, but she must be real. At least, she looks and feels real. As the storm worsens, secrets are revealed, and memories twist into reality, Ava and Ray plan to escape the lighthouse – but a strange creature wants to make them stay. Something that smells of sea salt, and the air after rain.

Quiet Light explores the lives of lonely people seeking refuge in the ocean after the world sinks. It was created in Menagerie’s Young Writers Programme, and was 1 of the 13 scripts selected out of 3062 submissions for the 2025 National Student Drama Festival.

This production is suitable for ages 16 and over.
